Kendra Thornton’s Tips for Healthy Family Vacations

There are so many fun things to plan when going on vacation. I enjoy all of the amusement parks, quirky museums and little adventures along the way. It’s sometimes difficult to control the hunger though. There’s a feeling that you can eat whatever you want when you’re on vacation because you’re “on vacation.” However, that free feeling seems to disappear when you return home and can’t fit into your favorite pair of jeans. That has happened to me one too many times. I started thinking about what the best ways were for me to stay fit on my travels this summer. These are just a few of those tips that I hope can help your family as well.

Go on Silly Adventures

If you say the word exercise to kids, it’s probably not their favorite way to play. However, there are ways to make this fun. Silly adventures like scavenger hunts and friendly tournaments provide some distraction while also making it easy to run around and burn off some calories. Going to the hotel pool is one of the best ways to have these kinds of non-exercise fun adventures. It shouldn’t be too competitive, but splash contests can get a little hairy!

Seek Out Sports Activities

There are always a few different gymnasiums and tennis courts to go to on vacation. If you can, find places where you can play team sports with your family like badminton, volleyball, baseball or football. These are just fun afternoon trips that will make it simple to exercise and work out your muscles after a vacation spent lounging. Shuffleboard, horseshoes and even bocce are great ways to exercise while traveling.

Stay Hydrated

Going on road trips rends to dehydrate everyone. That’s why keeping water around is so beneficial. If you buy a case of water before your trip or even once you reach your destination, you’ll save a lot of money and time. Buying water at theme parks or stopping at the gas station on the road can be really expensive.

Eat Locally

I’ve found that some of the best restaurants are locally owned and provide wonderful dishes that are made from local farmer ingredients. This is really important to me because I think we should support local restaurants as much as possible. I tend to love all of their food because it’s organic although it’s not always the healthiest.

Plan Your Trip

Staying fit and healthy on vacation is better when you plan out activities and meals for your family. We recently book a hotel with a quality gym for our upcoming trip to Orlando. With so many hotels in Orlando, this process proved to be a bit difficult however sites like Gogobot help as you can read user reviews.

I encourage everyone to try and implement these tips and tricks on their next family vacation.
