Where do you currently work and what is your position?

Owner of Specialty Floors Sales Agency with service for MO, KS, NE, IA, and Southern IL. I am 58 years young.

What was your starting weight?

My starting weight was 295 lbs.

What motivated you to begin losing weight and living a healthy lifestyle?

I realized I couldn’t continue to carry the weight I had accumulated.  I love my job as a Sales Agent for specialty flooring.  I wanted to give myself the best opportunity for a healthier life, and the ability to continue to play with my grandchildren for years.  I also enjoy playing golf and wanted to have more energy in my job to be willing to make that extra sales call that may be the next big order.

What has the hardest part been so far?

That’s easy- getting started.  I believe you have to decide to do it for yourself and follow through with it holding yourself responsible.  Let’s face it we excel every day in our jobs, I wanted to stop failing with my health.

What are some practical steps you have taken to lose the weight?

I have been on just about every diet plan known to mankind.  I have only been successful with one of them- Jenny Craig.  My wife and I work hard and long hours.  It is so easy to be too tired to cook and settle on take out food.  Great comfort, but large fat and calories that make it impossible to do anything but gain weight.

I convinced my wife to try this with me as it is so much easier as a couple.  This program supplies a great deal of the food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Once we determined to do this low fat low cal program we have also been doing cardio regularly.  I do a mix of the treadmill, elliptical and five miles on a stationery bike to assist my knees (3 surgeries) 5 days a week.  My wife simply does walking at school for 25 minutes.

I have a calorie amount that I am allowed to eat each day including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 3 snacks- 10 am. 2 pm and after dinner.  Each item we eat clearly has calorie amounts on the label.  When I travel I can have oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, and lunch at a deli, and can eat my evening meal in my hotel room.  It is easy to understand the key is the amount we are eating and the things we are eating.  I didn’t know what the produce section in the market was used for before, but now really enjoy my daily salad, and 3-4 fruits a day.  Naturally as I have grown older I don’t need the number of calories I needed as a college athlete.  However, I never made the eating amount adjustment, and have paid the price of higher weight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol etc.

My wife and I are both good cooks, but we have so much more understanding of how we can cook good food, but in a healthier way, and understand we can still enjoy eating, just smaller proportions.

How much weight have you lost and what is your target weight?

I weighed in last week after 3 months with a loss of 50 lbs. and lots of inches off my chest, stomach, hips, and thighs.  My target weight was 245 so I have reached it, but not sure I am ready to enter the maintenance period.  I have adapted well, and will continue a lower cal lower fat with better healthier decisions on what to eat and how much.  By the way my wife has lost 36 lbs. too.

How would you motivate others to reach their fitness goals?

If I am able to influence one person to do what I have done to enjoy a healthier longer lasting life it is worth spreading the word.  Don’t let yourself get in the situation I put myself in.  Start as soon as it is right for you, but it really doesn’t take very long.  3 months out of ones life is so little to sacrifice.  Staying on a maintenance play to not gain additional weight is easier and worthwhile.

You can’t enjoy what you have done in your life if you are not in good enough shape to enjoy it both now and in retirement.  Good luck to all.
